IAHJ has published the final article of a series of four written by ioLight’s Andrew Monk. The latest article ponders what portable microscopes could do for animal health in the future. You can read the full article on page 10 of IAHJ by following this link.
Help wipe out parasitic worms at #ECTMIH2019 Soil-transmitted helminths infect 1.5 billion people worldwide. Children infected with parasitic wormsare nutritionally and physically impaired. The World Health Organisation plans to eliminate morbidity due to soil-transmitted helminthiases in children by 2020. The treatments are widely available and inexpensive. However, helminths can become resistant to widely used drugs […]
ioLight microscopes are used everywhere from Antarctica to the Kazakh Steppe, so eventually your microscope will need a clean. Cleaning ioLight’s micro-engineered plastic lens is a little different from cleaning a laboratory microscope. ioLight’s founder Richard Williams explains how in this video.
Many thanks to Jim Janoso of Northern Focus Optical for this great picture of his ioLight microscope at Palmer Station in Antarctica.
Travelling to remote places means keeping the size and weight to a minimum. So, big heavy traditional compound microscopes are out. The ioLight microscope is the size of a small paperback book and weighs just a pound (450g), so you really can take it anywhere. Researchers use our microscopes in Kazakhstan, The Amazon, across Africa and Mount Everest as well as Antartica. There is no compromise on quality. 1-micron resolution images are saved on your phone ready for sharing on the internet when you next have a connection. It even records video.
The ioLight microscope is very rugged and simple to use. So you can capture the images you need fast.
ioLight designed our portable microscope designed to take with you, wherever you go.
ioLight, creator of the world’s first high-resolution portable microscope, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued US Patent 10,254,523 B2 entitled ‘Digital Portable Microscope’ to the UK-based company. The focus of the patent is the microscope’s unique folding feature, making it compact and light enough for in-the-field use, whilst still delivering detailed images.
The US patent, which follows the ioLight microscope’s granted UK patent in May 2018, uses British engineering, with the design conceptualised and created by Oxford University-educated Chief Executive Officers Andrew Monk and Richard Williams.
“We are pleased to strengthen our intellectual property protection with the addition of this patent in the US,” explains Andrew Monk Co-founder, ioLight. “We have consistently sought to protect, expand, and improve uses of our self-contained portable, high-resolution microscope.
“Having recently formed new partnerships with the highly regarded distributors, New York Microscope Company and Forestry Suppliers based in Jackson, MS. As well as continuing to work closely with aquaculture specialist, AquaSolver LLC based in Escondido, CA and Corpavet, Bogotá, Colombia, a veterinary expert covering Latin America, we have made great headway into the Americas.”
Andrew added: “The US patent further enables our US commercial strategy, and will allow us to concentrate on bringing this innovative technology to a number of industries. For example, it is perfect for in-the-field use, whether it’s a vet at a pen side or a botanist researching in a remote location. The ioLight microscope can be used instantly to capture outstanding high-resolution images onto a tablet or phone anywhere.”
The ability to record images and videos of subjects smaller than 10 microns on a mobile phone from a device that fits in a jacket pocket has already helped expeditions in The Amazon, Alaska and Antarctica for which it would not have been practical to use a conventional microscope.
“We are delighted that the patent has been granted and that we have the increased opportunity to reach US scientists, teachers, students and business owners to enable them to examine a wide variety of objects up close.”
The ioLight portable microscope has a resolution of 1 micron with built-in illumination from both above and below the sample. A glass sample stage allows for samples up to 35mm thick, or samples mounted on standard microscope slides. Despite all these professional features, the microscope folds flat and fits in a jacket pocket or desk drawer. The rechargeable battery lasts all day in normal use. Images and videos are displayed on an iPad, iPhone or Android app making it a go-anywhere high-resolution microscope. The microscope also works with all laptops.

We are pleased to announce an inverted version of our microscope, expanding our range of compact, high-resolution instruments. Our initial products have the optical system viewing the solid or liquid sample from above. These microscopes are robust, highly portable and powerful enough to view individual cells. They have been used in Alaska, Antarctica, The Amazon and even on Mount Everest.
However, often scientists need to view samples through the base of a petri dish as illustrated in the photo. The ioLight inverted microscope is the perfect tool for this job with its compact size and simplicity of use. The camera views the sample from below and displays it on a mobile phone, laptop or tablet over a wireless link so the instrument can be left on the experiment inside laminar flow hoods or suitable incubators. Researchers watch cultures grow in real time without disturbing experimental conditions. We use JPG, BMP or PNG formats to store images so they are simple to share and process.

ioLight has been working hard with our Latin America partner Corpavet to sell our portable, high-resolution microscopes to Colombia, Mexico and right across Latin America. Corpavet specialises in aquaculture and veterinary applications but is also very happy to support wider applications.

In our new video, Andrew explains how to focus the Magnificent Mobile Microscope and get a great image in a couple of minutes.
Laboratory microscopes have expensive and elaborate focusing mechanisms and XY stages that make it easy for an expert to get a great image. However, these controls also make conventional microscopes expensive, big and difficult to use in the field. The ioLight microscope fits your pocket in terms of its size and its price. One of the ways we achieve this is by discarding the focus knobs and the XY stage, but how do you actually use a microscope like that?
This short video shows how easy it is to use the Magnificent Mobile Microscope even on a bench by the river.
It was an enormous privilege to meet members of the British and Dutch Royal Families the ioLight microscope with Their Majesties the King and Queen of The Netherlands and Their Highnesses the Earl and Countess of Wessex at the Netherlands UK Innovation showcase yesterday as part of the Dutch State Visit to the UK. The conversation was really interesting and the royal party showed a strong understanding of how a laboratory grade pocket microscope could change the world. Prince Edward observed that our price was about the same as a pair of binoculars.
Huge thanks to the Royal Family for posting this wonderful video so quickly.
ioLight has invented a portable microscope, with a resolution of better than 1μm, which produces beautiful pictures of animal and plant cells and displays them directly onto your tablet or mobile phone.
